Goddesses and Women of Mexico

La Adelita

La Adelita is the Woman of the Revolution, the companion of the Revolutionary, be he Emiliano Zapata or Sub-Comandante Marcos.

The artist has translated the figure of La Adelita into a simple but forceful entity.

Her body, uncarved, is held on strong legs. She is on the move, in full stride. Over her right shoulder hangs a bandolier.

In her right hand, she carries an ear of corn, symbol of her providing food for the cause, and in her left hand she grips a rifle.

As of Nov. 1998, this version of "La Adelita" is in the private collection of Patti & Don McFarland of Brainerd, Minnesota.
