Goddesses and Women of Mexico
Chimalma

Chimalma, mother of Quetzalcoatl,
"The Plumed Serpent" is said to have
declared his divinity prior to his birth, having conceived him upon
swallowing a blue-green jadestone.
On her figure, carved down
her right side, are a series of transformations
through which she passes on her cosmic journey: Mother, Healer,
Shaman.
Chimalma's
left side is uncarved. Her smooth, long-flowing hair pours down
her back toward the image of the Rain God,
Tlaloc engraved on her buttocks. Tlaloc, who carries
a golden serpent representative
of thunder and lightning, is her final transformation
