Mictlancihuatl,
the "Lady of Mictlan", goddess of the underworld,
life and death.
She is the symbol
of the sacred journey
toward death upon which
we all embark at the moment of our birth.

"The
destination of the earth is to engender unceasingly, to
give form and life to everything that returns to her inert
and sterile [...] the earth is found at the end and at
the beginning of all life" (Borgia,
77).

With sensitivity,
Arturo Macias shows a strong and voluptuous
Mictlancihuatl bearing an Eagle
- the bird which soars the highest, taking to Warrior
to the heavens - in her right hand, and a Shield
of Feathers in the form of a butterfly
- to the Aztecs, a symbol of spirits of ancestors
incarnate - in her left. Skulls
adorn her forehead, necklace and belt.
