Macias is an artist who lives and plies his trade in Durango,
Dgo. in the northern part of Mexico. *** His masks, reminiscent in so many ways of African
art, combine such materials as wood, leather, palm frond stems,
roughly-worked semi-precious stones, paint, clay and metal. *** According to Roberto, what he is trying to attain
in this form of artistic expression is a fusion of native cultures
-- not just those of Mexico or Latin America, but of all the
influences of the earth, using the natural materials of the
land.
